Z Fortune an interesting Kentucky Derby player
Pyro may be the better known of the Steve Asmussen Kentucky Derby pair, but Z Fortune sports the look of a live longshot.
Son of Siphon began his career with three straight tallies, then was soundly defeated by his aforementioned stablemate Pyro in New Orleans. Next up was the Rebel, and the heavily favored colt threw in a rare clunker that day.
His final Derby prep came in the Arkansas Derby, and he put forth one of his best efforts. Racing wide from an outer post, he plugged away throughout and ended up a rock solid second behind perfect tripper Gayego. He could have easily got the job done with a better post and more ground saved, but it was a strong prep nonetheless.
Arkansas Derby pilot Robby Albarado has a return call on the first Saturday in May, and although he seems a bit suspect in the stamina department, he rates a longshot gander in a wide open year like this.
