Pyro well prepared for Derby

Steve Asmussen did a stellar job getting Curlin through the rigors of the Triple Crown last year, and the valuable lessons he learned could pay huge dividends for Pyro in 2008.

The classically bred Pulpit colt, out of a Wild Again mare, steadily improved as distances increased in his two-year-old campaign. His speed figures have not gone up this year, but the sustained runner shows two straight visually impressive wins despite getting no pace help in New Orleans.

He receives his third and final Derby prep in the Blue Grass on April 12th, and that synthetic race was used by last year’s Derby hero Street Sense.

Pyro still has to prove that he can rally into an above par pace and win, but he owns a quick turn of foot and showed improved positional speed in his Louisiana Derby triumph.

He figures to be plenty fit following his final Polytrack prep, and if nothing else, he has the perfect blend of class and seasoning to contend on the first Saturday in May…and his astute trainer has much to do with his success.
