My first day at Louisiana Downs

by Jarrod Horak on June 27th, 2008

I arrived in Shreveport on Tuesday June 24th after a 20+ hour drive from Maryland. Got a few hours sleep, then it was off to Louisiana Downs on Wednesday to get set up in my new Track Handicapper/TV Host position.

I got a tour on Wednesday and met many wonderful new people, including Track Announcer Travis Stone, VP of Racing Operations Mark Midland, and many others.

Started out doing the morning handicapping show with Travis Stone on Thursday, then I jumped right into the Paddock Show 15 minutes before the first race, and my initial performance was an adventure to say the least.

Just as I started talking about my first race contenders, a gust of wind blew my notes all around, and I lost track of what I was saying. Needless to say I stumbled through the first race, and my sign off left much to be desired as well.

Things settled down after that, and I got more comfortable in front of the camera as the day went on.

I gave out a few chalky winners and learned quite a bit along the way.

Gotta head back to the track for my second day in a few hours, and I am expecting smoother sailing this afternoon.
