Louisiana Downs weekend recap (July 26th-27th)

by Jarrod Horak on July 30th, 2008

Saturday July 26th LA Downs notes

I got a trio of tops home (The Ivan Show, Frenchie’s Dream, Private Pressley), with the bulk of my damage done in the earlier part of the card. My best bet Rockittown (race 10, 4.40-1) ran much improved race 2nd time out but had to settle for clear place finish.
A pair of wins for leading rider Don Simington, and congrats to hustling apprentice Dustin Dugas on his 1st win of the meet.

Race 1: Rather Exciting was hung out to dry from outside post. He finished 2nd in 1st two career outings and can go better next time.

Race 4: With the turf rails at 25 feet, a speed duel trend has been developing, and the crazy battle between Pretty Squall and Nine M.M set the table for Classy Beck, but the latter was DQ’d under Jacinto. Samba G ($46.80) was declared the winner. I would play either of the two pace casualties back under the right circumstances.

Race 8: My disappointing top Crusher Run finished an okay 5th from the rail post and galloped out past the field under Simington.

Race 9: I thought my 3rd choice Hammer Rat had a good chance to hit the board because he had some underneath turf ability and tactical speed. He did sit the right stalking trip but did better than anticipated and pulled off the $50.60 upset after my top two (Bobo Is Loose, Exploit Exposed) hooked up in protracted pace duel.

Sunday July 27th LA Downs notes

I got bookend tops home with Skillz in the opener and Hurricane Leiza in the finale
Early/pressing types continue to go well on the main, but this is not the same speed biased oval from past weeks. Off the pace types have a fighting chance, and the track is much more fair.

John Jacinto was the riding story with four winners on the day, and chalk up two more wins for apprentice Dustin Dugas.

Race 2: Morning Ridge is now 4-4 after another sharp stalk and pounce tally from an outside post. My top Queen Rolex gave a game chase but was second best this day.

Race 9: My value oriented best bet Crafty Earl (6-1) was out of the gate like a shot but could never shake away from eventual winner Productive Force. Right idea, wrong outcome. I was looking for aggressive handling under Carlos Gonzalez, and a wire job was in my mind, but he faded to 4th.
