Louisiana Downs week in review + July 3rd preview

by Jarrod Horak on July 3rd, 2008

It was an interesting first week on the job at Louisiana Downs (June 26th - June 29th). I had my notes almost blow away on my initial paddock report, and a horse reared and fell right in front of me the next day.

The main track profile typically favors early/pressing types from inner to middle posts at most distances, but there was a pronounced speed bias in place on Sunday. Inside lanes seemed best with the top two finishers staying that way in no less than six of the nine contests.

Francisco Torres was two wins shy of 2,000 for his career going into the June 29th card, but he took a tumble and was absent for his final three mounts.

Leading rider Don Simington booted home nine winners last week.

The July 3rd card looks competitive, with a pair of turf races on tap, including a decent optional claimer in the 4th. Pleasantly Blessed will be the heavy fav in the 4th, but Exciting Empress is razor sharp and could pull a mild surprise.

Louie Roussel (owner) has a live 2nd timer in the 7th (Skirting Disaster). She was in a tough post (11) to kick off her career, and she ran in spots (up close early, dropped back, came again) in a better than appears show finish.

PVal is back after an expected weekend stint in New Mexico, and he is on a few live contenders, including Margarita Mea in the finale. She improved on the turf last time, and place finisher Pyrite Ghost came back to graduate in the 9th race on Sunday.
