Louisiana Downs week in review (July 3rd - July 6th)
My second week as Louisiana Downs Track Handicapper/TV Host started with a bang as my Thursday (July 3rd) best bet Charismaticsnephew pulled off a sharp wire job to the tune of $15.80. Unfortunately, my best bets the remainder of the week failed to get the job done, with Chessa Fair finishing 2nd on Friday, Angelwithspirit 3rd on Saturday, and Brahm’s Dynasty a disappointing 6th on Sunday. I had a handful of tops and numerous 2nd and 3rd choices win throughout the week, and I continue to gather jockey/trainer stats, charts, and track profiles.
Below are the notable horse, trainer, and jockey performances for the week that was…
*** Recently hot rider Jose Verenzuela was involved in a spill on the 4th of July. Unfortunately, he broke a few ribs and separated his shoulder. Here’s hoping for a speedy recovery.
*** Francisco Torres reached the 2,000 win plateau for his career at Evangeline Downs on Friday night (July 4th) aboard Sammie Sam in the 11th race.
*** Pat Valenzuela rode three winners on the week as he continues to get his conditioning back. He is riding at 124 pounds daily.
*** Leading trainer Jorge Lara had a fine week, saddling three winners on Friday and another pair on Sunday. Lonnie Meche (7 wins/week) was the rider of choice on four occasions, with brother Cody accounting for the other winner.
*** Trainer Patrick Mouton saddled a trio of winners (4 for the week) on Sunday (July 6th), including a pair with jockey John Jacinto. Note that Jacinto pulled off the hat trick on Sunday and booted home five winners for the week.
*** Gritty mare Candy Ball dusted the gents in the $50k Independence Stakes at a flat mile on the turf Saturday. When the best horse lands an advantageous post and sits the right trip, good things usually happen, and the favored miss did not disappoint at $4.60. Beta Capo (steve asmussen) could not overcome the outside post and was out-tripped by the winning fav in a solid place finish.
