Louisiana Downs week in review (July 17th-20th) + July 24th preview

LA Downs week in review (July 17-20)

There were a few noteworthy jockey and trainer efforts last week at Louisiana Downs, and the horse performance of the week was a tough call as well…

*** The turf (firm) rails were down and off the pace types performed well. The fast main track played as fair as can be expected, but note that early/pressing types continue to do the bulk of damage at all distances.

*** Donnie Meche booted home 4 winners on Sunday and 7 for the week, and brother Lonnie got in on the act with 5 wins himself. Carlos Gonzalez pulled off four wire jobs, and leading rider Don Simington had a quite 4 wins.

*** The same high % suspects continue to be dangerous in the trainer ranks, including Jerry Cart, Eric Heitzmann, Brian House, and Jorge Lara, but the week belonged to Sam David Jr. with four wins.

*** The top horse performance could have gone to good looking 2yo turf sprinters Smokin Again or Zigaree, and sharp sprinter Doyouwanttodance was impressive again, but after much deliberation, I give top props to Euphony. She smartly moved up in her 2nd turf try, and she rated kindly from an outer post en route to a fine Marie P. DeBartolo Oaks tally in Saturday’s stakes finale.

July 24th LA Downs preview

A thunderstorm is rumbling in my Shreveport home, which is approximately 10 miles from the track. I do not know if it is raining at LA Downs, but we sure need the moisture. If we stay on the grass tomorrow, the rails will be set at 25 feet.

A 10 race card on tap for Thursday, including a trio of grass races. Some favs look solid throughout the day, including Cook’s Nook (race 2), Wadi Suki (race 4), Major Jeff (race 7), Melbas Slew (race 8), and Stags Attitude (race 10). Harrah’s Lad is a value oriented contender in the opener, and the 5th race superfecta looks playable with Sippin’onatallboy the key.
