Louisiana Downs review: Thursday July 3rd

by Jarrod Horak on July 5th, 2008

The speed biased surface that was present on Sunday (June 29th) has disappeared as expected, but early/pressing types continue to make up the bulk of winners at most if not all distances on the main track.

July 3rd @ Louisiana Downs

Nice win by Andrew Leggio firster Flamingo Key in the opener. He came in early and made a good looking 4-wide move to prove much the best. My top Polite never got involved after some trouble in the early going. I think he needs a drop in class.

Pleasantly Blessed (race 4) figures to try stakes foes after dispatching of a compact but quality group in this filly and mare 7.5f turfer. PVal booted home the Morris Nicks trainee.

My best bet Charismaticsnephew (race 6, $15.80) was aggressively handled by Kirk Leblanc in this sharp wire job effort on the stretchout. Roy Matranga is a crafty conditioner.

Speaking of aggressive tactics, Francisco Torres gunned Sturges Ducoing 2nd timer Skirting Disaster to the front in this MSW (race 7) for LA-bred two-year-old fillies, and she gamely held on by a half thanks to her rider. Note that she is owned by Louie Roussel III.

Autobeacat (race 9) was a razor sharp winner of this state bred optional claimer. She was up from the claiming ranks and owns fine early/pressing speed. Donnie Meche rode for Eric Heitzmann, who is now 6-16 at the stand.

Lucky Intuition was much the best in this maiden claiming turf finale. The overachieving Jose Verenzuela was the pilot
