Louisiana Downs recap (Saturday June 21st)

by Jarrod Horak on June 22nd, 2008

I was recently named Track Handicapper/TV Host for Harrah’s Louisiana Downs.

I start my new position on June 26th, and the meet runs through October 18th.

Below is a recap of the Saturday, June 21, 2008 card from Louisiana Downs…

Race 1: The stalk and pounce theme from Friday keeps on truckin’ with Penny Parfait ($11.80) in the opener. Francisco Torres in the irons.

Race 2: Brown Eyed Betty (Diego/Locke firster) went wire to wire as the fav. The other speedsters fell apart, allowing 76-1 shot Kristens Rebel to land the place.

Race 3: Another chalk wire job, this time router Wild Buck ($4.40) controlled the tempo under John Jacinto. Bullion was getting to the winner from off the pace. Spruce Jr. was a wide, stalking 3rd.

Race 4: 2nd win for Torres, as Yukon Bandit ($7.40) put away his 3.90-1 pace rival (Party at Eight) en route to a clear score. Point Minister rallied to finish a solid 2nd.

Race 5: Easy prominent throughout tally for heavy fav Cryptic Statement ($3.20). Lonnie Meche in the irons for Jorge Lara. Stage Door Bertie was clearly 2nd best in the strung out field.

Race 6: Hat trick for Torres, with Sam David’s Axe Man ($10.20) besting fav La Cowboy by a length after a protracted pace battle. It was 9.5 lengths back to the rest.

Race 7: Love to Tell ($15.60) upset fav Euphony in the $50k Little Treasure for three-year-old fillies traveling 7.5f on the weeds. Strong effort by the winner, and the runner-up was hardly disgraced. Winning time was 1:30.16.

Race 8: Longest shot on the board Greeley’s Conquest ($47.60) necked heavy fav Wind Water in an exciting 18th renewal of the Temperence Hill at six furlongs. The top two were in from Lone Star. Churchill invader Cougar Cat was up for the show. 6f in 1:09.46.

Race 9: Back to back stakes wins for jockey Q Hamilton, with Lone Star Special ($8.60) a stalking winner of the $50k Pair of Deuces. The three-year-old son of Malabar Gold traveled the 7.5 grassy furlongs in 1:30.43. Lee’s Spirit made a race of it under Simington. Pursue A Dream was clear of the rest.

Race 10: Stalk and pounce type Sleek Flyer ($6.40) easily nabbed the finale under Simington. Zarbalina followed the winner around while clearly 2nd best.
