Louisiana Downs recap for Sunday July 20th
Louisiana Downs notes for Sunday (July 20th)
I had a productive day with four on-top winners on Sunday @ LA Downs, but I was most proud of the 4th place finish of I’m a Cleverdancer in the grassy 6th.
In my paddock report 15 minutes prior to post, I mentioned that I had used I’m a Cleverdancer the last time she ran because of the great 2nd time off a layoff stats for her trainer Howard Scarberry. She ended up a respectable 5th last time, and I thought the extra distance today in her 3rd race back would lead to a 4th place finish, with 3rd an outside possibility. She was 47-1, and I told anyone willing to listen to key her in 4th in superfecta wagers. Sure enough, she was along for 4th behind my chalky winning top Pomatini. LA Downs track announcer Travis Stone and I call this type of opportunity a reverse pyramid. If you know which horse is going to finish under, and can key that horse in a particular position, you are well on your way to a decent exotic score.
In the 8th and feature race, my value oriented top Point Gold ($12.00) was razor sharp in victory. This Point Given 4yo has found new life on the sod. Brutal Attack was 5-5 on the sod going in, but he was very uncomfortable and wide early. He made it up to his customary pacesetting duties, but he weakened from his early troubled efforts and can be a prominent throughout threat next time versus softer.
Both surfaces at all distances seemed to play fair once again. Big day for Donnie Meche with four wins (2 turf). Sam David Jr. (claiming sprints) and Morris Nicks (maidens) both saddled two winners on the card.
