Louisiana Downs recap for Saturday July 19th
Louisiana Downs review: Saturday (July 19th)
I pulled off an odd handicapping feat on Saturday @ LA Downs. I swept the card ten race card with my selections, but the only problem was seven of my 2nd choices won, and my 3rd choices nabbed the other three races. My tops garnered a trio of place finishes and a show finish.
Kirk Leblanc was the riding star with four winners on the card, including a pair of stakes wins. A pair of wins for MC Berry and leading rider Don Simington.
The main track played fair, but sustained runners are still a no-no on the win end at all distances. Stalkers and closers best on the turf course (rails down).
Race 3: My top Shorebreeze Bandit was unlucky to get run down in this 2L spot. He was in from Arlington (synthetic) and appreciated a return to regular dirt, but he could not overcome his wide prominent throughout journey while clearly 2nd best.
Race 4: Smokin Again stalked and pounced on the dueling Run Don’t Stroll in the $50k Princess Stakes for 2yo fillies, and the winner traveled 5f on the firm turf in :56.69. Congrats to overdue trainer Charles Hukill.
Race 7: Zeke’s Fortune (C.Meche/B.House) had a brutal trip as my 10-1 top. Maybe she would not have beaten 5L winning fav Irish Alert, but a place finish was not out of the question. She ended up a BTL 5th after racing wide and steadying hard.
Race 8: Visually impressive off the pace score for Zigaree in the $50k Minstrel for 2yo turf sprinters. 5f in :57.03. The son of Congaree obviously liked the green, which was not surprising with Arazi on top and Danzig on bottom. My top Takin the Bullet sat the right trip but was not good enough while missing the place by a head.
Race 9: Doyouwanttodance continued her razor sharp local form in another wire job. She held ultra-consistent Precious Kiss safe by a 1/2 in today’s 30th running of the Hallowed Dreams. The disappointing Steamy Ridge battling for the early lead and weakened to 7th.
Race 10: Euphony was impressive in her 2nd turf try. She stalked from today’s outer post and outkicked Steve Asmussen’s Doc’s Delight in the Marie P. DeBartolo Oaks for 3yo fillies.
