Louisiana Downs notes for June 29th
The final day of my first week of work at Louisiana Downs produced a pronounced speed bias, with inside lanes holding the edge. There were eight virtual wire-to-wire winners, with Pyrite Ghost in the finale the only off the pace type to score. Also, in at least six races the top two stayed that way throughout.
Here are notes and horses to watch from the Sunday (June 29th) card…
Race 3: Off the turf five furlong sprint. Doyouwanttodance took full advantage of the inside speed bias. Heavy fav Steamy Ridge tracked throughout and could have easily scored if post positions were switched.
Race 4: Suspision ended up a solid stalking 2nd off the Jerry Cart claim but had no chance to catch lone speedster and my 1st best bet Rude.
Race 6: Miss Zoomin Boone turned in one of the more impressive losing efforts of the week. She landed the rail and topped out in her last start here, and she seemed up against it from post 11 over an inside speed conducive track today. She rallied wide to miss by a head while clear of the show.
Race 8: Hurricane Susan (5-2) turned in a deceptively good effort. She was exiting two straight claiming (2L, 3L) wins this year for the sharp Maynard Chatters. She graduated in a state bred special weight and took action in a pair of allowance events last year before going on the sidelines. She was back in the entry level ranks for this, and she was basically finished after showing no early interest. She picked up the pace a bit in the lane and galloped out past the field in a better than appears 5th place finish.
Race 9: Originally scheduled for the turf. Pyrite Ghost from off the pace, and based on the way the track played all day long, her effort almost has to be upgraded. Runner-up and fav Hot Rocket (Lemon Drop Kid) probably wants more ground and turf as well.
A pair of wins for Jose Verenzuela and Don Simington.
