Louisiana Downs notes for June 28th

by Jarrod Horak on June 28th, 2008

Big day with my trackside analysis at Louisiana Downs. Got 2 of my 3 best bets home, both John Jacinto/Tony Richey runners (Hannah Girl, Melbas Slew). My suggested trifecta also struck in the Melbas Slew race…hope you had it!

I am learning the oval, meeting the connections, and watching the horses daily from the paddock.

Here are some observations from the Saturday card…

Race 1: Sams Lost Soldier bobbled at the start and rallied from last to land the show in a respectable effort.

Race 2: Lock Your Doors took all of the late action, and the firster ran to his 4-5 odds after a less than ideal beginning. Note that there was nothing behind him.

Race 3: Ten-year-old Spend A Web continues his sharp recent form with a nice extended sprint tally. It is a rare sight when a veteran wins doing something new…gotta love it.

Race 4: Without a doubt the most impressive loser of the week so far. FTS Sister Ticket (Torres-Leggio) started off poorly and was lagging well behind the rest. She was still nowhere turning for home but started flying on the outside and somehow managed to land the show while galloping out past the field. You just do not make up that kind of ground over this speed conducive oval.

Race 5: In a gutsy move, John Jacinto dove inside the tiring pacesetter and just squeezed through for me with Hannah Girl.

Don Simington won four on Friday, and he grabbed the late double to cap the Saturday card.
