July 25th Louisiana Downs review + July 26th preview
Friday (July 25th) LA Downs recap
I struck with my best price horse yet at Louisiana Downs, as 8th race top Oneafternoon rallied from off the pace to the tune of $37.20. He was definitely overlaid because he was only beaten a bit over a length by today’s overbet fav Bucket ‘n’ Pans (4th @ 3-2) when they both met here last time. Today’s contested pace made all the difference in the reversal of fortunes.
In the finale, my chalky top Ski Lift just held off my live longshot and 3rd choice Dream Town (42-1). The former was aided by the 25 foot rail setting, and the latter enjoyed a return to turf racing and should have never gone off at that price.
Mr. Canaveral (F.Torres/B.House) was winning for the 3rd straight time at his 3rd different sprint distance while rising in class.
Passport was up in the final strides to deny fav T.C. Champ in the stakes quality 7th at 7.5 furlongs on the turf. Al Stall Jr. got the much overdue win, and maybe this will kick start his barn.
Kirk Leblanc and leading rider Don Simington both booted home a pair. Two wins for trainer John Locke (1 via DQ).
July 26th LA Downs preview
We have a 10-race card on tap for Saturday, including a trio of grass races. Two of the turfers look chalky, but maybe we can garner some value in the grassy 7th with Jazzberry Jam. I keyed the maiden claimer on top at 30-1 in his latest, and he was in the running before weakening in the lane. It was a better effort with blinks following a layoff, and his trainer John Locke is adept on the turf and won two races yesterday. Look out if he sneaks away early with the rails at 25 feet.
The Ivan Show looks interesting in the 2nd, and Rockittown could be a live 2nd timer in the finale.
