Gayego trips out in Arkansas Derby triumph
Southern California synthetic specialist Gayego parlayed a beautiful tracking trip into a gritty three-quarter length tally over Z Fortune in the Arkansas Derby, and both horses figure to head to Louisville in three weeks.
Gayego is one of several quality early/pressing runners heading to Churchill Downs, and his win on Saturday seems to flatter the California contingent, most notably Santa Anita Derby hero Colonel John.
Z Fortune had to delight Steve Asmussen, especially after Pyro flopped in the Blue Grass a few hours earlier. A better post and a bit more ground saved could have led to a reversal over Gayego, and it was encouraging to see the Zayat Stables runner rebound from his below par fifth place finish as the favorite in the Rebel Stakes four weeks earlier.
