Del Mar recap: Day 5 Sunday July 20th - Eddie Read Handicap

by Jarrod Horak on July 21st, 2008

Del Mar review (July 20th)

Day 5 of the Del Mar meet is in the books, and I had a very productive day selling the Sunday (July 20th) full card. Got four on-top winners, including 2 of my 3 bests bets home as well as the late Pick 4.

Polytrack continues to play fair. Five sprint races were run, and the winners came from all over the place (wire, stalk, late). We had a wire job and couple of late runners take the three turf races carded.

Bejarano booted home both stakes winners, and Russell Baze got the candy in the maiden claiming finale for Bill Morey. Mike Mitchell and Doug O’Neill both saddled a pair of winners.

Race 4: Turtle Creek Babe ran a big race in her bow, and that was significant because her trainer Ron McAnally rarely has his firsters ready to fire. I figured she was primed for her second start, and note that barn was 21% with 2nd timers. She rallied late to photo a couple of promising firsters (Stardom Bound, Montana Fields). The place finisher had a troubled beginning and won’t be a maiden much longer, and Hollendorfer’s (losing fav) show finisher had the lead in the lane but couldn’t quite hold off the top two.

Race 7: Lethal Heat enjoyed a return to the state bred ranks and added another stakes win to her resume in the 7f Fleet Treat. Versatile filly has won on turf/synthetic, and routing/sprinting, and she’s already a graded winner as well. Barry Abrams is going to continue to have alot of fun with this miss. Spring Awakening (4th) was mistakenly favored over the aforementioned winner. She was coming off an extended break and returning at a tough distance while meeting a quality, fit rival. She can improve off this race, and I would consider playing her next time if the price was right.

Race 8: One of my fav horses Monzante rallied from last to edge Whatsthescript in a decent renewal of the Eddie Read Hcp (G1). Storm Military set the pace and held the show. Spring House, a neck away from 3rd, was prepping for upcoming marathons. Lava Man tracked and weakened to last. He can no longer hang with this type.

Monday, July 21st Del Mar

An eight race card is on tap for Monday, and the featured 7f race is my racingonthenet free selection of the day.
