Del Mar recap: Day 4 Saturday July 19th - San Diego Handicap
Day 4 of the Del Mar meet is in the books, and the Pick 6 was nailed despite a huge upset in the Osunitas Hcp by 43-1 outsider Zardana (Gryder/McAnally). Main track continues to play fair, with the route races favoring speed on Saturday, and patient runners doing best in sprints. Stalkers and off the pace types held the advantage on the sod. Eoin Harty and John Sadler both saddled a pair of winners, and Aaron Gryder pulled off the hat trick…
Race 7: Sharp wire job for Well Armed in the San Diego Hcp (G2). I thought he might need the outing as he was seemingly prepping for the longer, richer Pacific Classic (G1) and had not been seen since the Debai World Cup in March. He was never seriously threatened by runner-up Surf Cat. Mostaccoli Mort rallied from 10th and last to garner the show.

LAD 8 (OC-30/2x, 3up, 8T) Number 4 Point Gold (9-2) is interesting making his 2nd start on the sod. He battled early, dropped back, and came again to get beat a length (2nd) in his local turf bow at this distance on June 22nd. He was highly thought of last year but was thrown off his game after competing in such races as the Super Derby. 4yo son of Point Given may have found new life on the sod for fine trainer Tony Richey. The Plays: Number 4 to win
