Curlin to try turf in Grade 1 Man O’ War

by Jarrod Horak on July 8th, 2008

Curlin has been approved to race in the eleven furlong Grade 1 Man O’ War at Belmont Park on Saturday (July 12th) despite ongoing legal difficulties of 20% owners Midnight Cry Stables.

Steve Asmussen and company are contemplating a possible start in the Group 1 Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp in France (October 5th). Curlin had his first official turf work on July 1st, breezing seven panels over firm footing in company with four-year-old stablemate Hawaii Calls. Curlin necked his mate in 1:31.20 (dogs up), with a final quarter in 12.20 and a flat mile gallop-out in 1:45.60.

Note that the son of Smart Strike has won five straight against three-and-up foes, but Saturday’s turf contest might be his toughest test to date. He is expected to face the likes of 2006 BC Turf hero Red Rocks and 2004 BC Turf winner and 2005 Man O’ War winner Better Talk Now.
