Colonel John works light out for Kentucky Derby
Colonel John, the most consistent Kentucky Derby player, drilled an outstanding five furlongs in :57-4/5 at Churchill Downs on April 27th. A strong local work often signals a big effort on Derby day, and The Colonel needed to strut his stuff on conventional dirt.
He got his final quarter of a mile in :23-1/5 and galloped out six panels in 1:11-1/5. Granted, the Churchill surface was playing fast to morning works on Sunday, but synthetic specialist Colonel John showed that he could handle regular dirt, and the talented colt should be taken seriously on the first Saturday in May.
