Colonel John rested and ready for big summer/fall campaign
Colonel John, my 2008 Kentucky Derby pick, is back from a break on the farm and is pointing to the Grade 2 Swaps Stakes at Hollywood Park on July 12th.
In his first work since a 6th place finish behind Big Brown on the first Saturday in May, the son of Tiznow went four furlongs in :49 at Santa Anita.
If everything goes smoothly, plans call for a stop at Satatoga and the Mid-Summer Derby. Of course, the Breeders’ Cup is held at Santa Anita this year, and the Colonel is already a grade one winner over that synthetic surface.
As for the Kentucky Derby, it was his first start on conventional dirt, and although he worked a sharp 5f in :57.80 at Churchill prior to the Derby, he was not able to sustain his run. Maybe it was the footing, or he might not have been fit enough. Whatever the case, I still hold him in high regard and believe he will blossom later on…like some of my other disappointing Triple Crown series picks (Any Given Saturday, Eddington, and Rock Hard Ten come to mind).
