Belmont Stakes Preview (May 27th): Big Brown back at the track

Big Brown has been confined to his Belmont Park stall since a quarter crack was discovered on his left front foot Friday, but he made an unexpected visit to the track on Tuesday.

He jogged once around the rainy 1-1/2 mile oval and is scheduled to have his final Belmont Stakes work early next week.

Obviously, he needed to burn off all of that pent-up energy, and simple jogs like that are important in keeping his mind and body in rhythm.

Keeping Big Brown relaxed for this final Belmont Stakes push is key…remember 2004.

Smarty Jones was unbeaten and exiting a romping Preakness victory, and the press basically handed him the Triple Crown, but his rivals had other ideas.

Eddington (Bailey) and Rock Hard Ten (Solis) refused to let Smarty have everything his own way, and they challenged him from the outset, which forced the Triple Crown hopeful to expend too much early energy, enabling Birdstone to run him down.

Big Brown can expect more of the same in the 2008 Belmont Stakes, but he is much more rateable than Smarty Jones…as long as he can keep visiting the track on a daily basis.
