Belmont Stakes Preview (May 22nd): Denis of Cork intrigues
Denis of Cork was considered a top Kentucky Derby candidate after three victories in as many starts to kick off his career, but his schedule was interesting to say the least after that.
Following his victory in the Southwest (G3), his owner decided to call an audible and skip the Rebel Stakes based on sheets numbers patterns. The thinking was he would peak in his 5th lifetime start, presumably the Derby, so his connections opted for one final prep (instead of two) in the Illinois Derby.
The son of Harlan’s Holiday was flat in his final prep, and his lack of seasoning came back to hurt him. He trained well in advance of the Derby, and he ended up a better than expected 3rd considering his unorthodox prep schedule (1 race in 10+ weeks).
He drilled a solid five furlongs in 1:01 at Churchill on May 19th, and the promising sort is on the right path and looms an interesting price player in the Belmont Stakes.
