Ariege nabs Beaumont; BC Mile hero Kip Deville returns in Maker’s Mark
For the second day in a row, Garrett Gomez and Robert Frankel teamed up to win an extended sprint graded race at Keeneland.
On Wednesday, it was Ventura in the Vinery Madison, and Ariege parlayed a rail trip into an off the pace one-length tally over Santa Anita shipper Golden Doc A in Thursday’s Beaumont.
Gomez and Frankel go for a graded stakes three-peat in Friday’s Maker’s Mark with Out Of Control. Five-year-old horse won a pair of graded turf routes last year, and he had to need his seasonal bow versus tough customers. He projects a decent stalking trip and is a generous 10-1 on the morning line.
Mr. Frankel is also represented by longshot Thousand Words. Santa Anita invader looked good in an optional claiming tally last time, and the show finisher returned to score. He sports a strong local bullet for this and gets the acid test this afternoon.
Kip Deville returns in a salty event, and note that he won this race last year. He is two-for-two here and seven for ten at a flat mile. The favorite must always be respected in this type of grass race.
War Monger was visually impressive in the Sunshine Millions Turf to kick off his 2008 campaign, and he was a bit flat in the Grade 1 Kilroe Mile last time. He seems to do his best running when allowed to settle and make a big late run, and that strategy could pay huge dividends over this closer friendly turf course. At 10-1 on the line, he looks like the value play.
